Feel 30 Years Younger with Exercise!
We all want the secret to feeling and looking younger, well the cats out of bag and just in time for your New Years Resolution. Exercise! Yes as simple as that sounds it is true, a recent study at the Human Performance Laboratory at Ball State University in Indiana proved that life long exercise helps individuals have the heart, lunge and muscular fitness of someone 30 years younger! The study tested men and women alike in their 70’s who have maintained life long exercise since their 20’s and 30’s. The results were remarkable! The cardiovascular strength of the 75 year olds tested compared to that of 40 and 45 year olds and the muscular strength was even more impressive which was compare to 25 year olds in strength. So exercise can really stop the ticking of time on our bodies.
It’s never too late to start, the key is to maintain your fitness routine and make it something you enjoy doing life long. Working out should not be a chore, try and find something you enjoy doing and make it apart of your lifestyle. Think outside of the box besides your traditional gym membership and running on a treadmill. Try running outside or even walking outside for 30 minutes daily. Boutique workouts such as Pilates, yoga and barre have also become popular in recent years. Focusing on moving your major muscle groups to elevate your heart rate creating a unique cardio workout all their own.
Starting your life long fitness journey might feel like a chore in the beginning as you will be adding something to your daily routine. It takes 40 days to create a habit for yourself. So push through that initial adjustment period, specially if you are trying something new or starting to workout for the first time in your life. You will come to look forward to this time for you and begin to create that life long commitment to your health. When you doubt yourself just know your 75 year old self will thank you! Not to mention the results you will begin to see right away, you will have more energy from working out, increase your stamina, you might even start dropping pant sizes and a few inches.
Leland and Megan Stock have always believed “home is where the heart is.” They’ve lived in several wonderful places over their years together, finally settling here in El Dorado Hills, and recently adding the first child to their family. “But no matter where we live,” Megan began, “having each other, we have always felt at home.”
Leland is originally from Westchester County in New York, and his family still lives there. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Albany, graduating with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Megan, a California girl, attended Santa Clara University and earned a double major BA in Dance and Psychology. She also went to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco, where she majored in Product Development.
Megan naturally stayed in San Francisco to work, and Leland also found his way to that city for employment. While they were both living and working in San Francisco, some friends set them up on a blind date at a concert at the Fillmore in 2007. Megan says it was love at first sight, and Leland wasted no time in calling her the next day to ask her on their first “official” date.

The Effects of Stress on our Bodies:
When under stress or in a stressful situation our bodies go into “fight or flight” mode to prepare itself. We release a mix of hormones and chemicals, adrenaline, cortisol and nor-epinephrine to help us prepare for the action of “fight or flight” to get us out of our stressful situation. Even though we are not planning on fighting anyone or physically running away from a situation (although sometime we wish we could) our bodies still end up releasing these hormones.
If we do not have a healthy outlet for stress our bodies end up being in a continual state of stress. High levels of adrenaline, cortisol and nor-epinephrine in our body can have a host of negative side effects on us. Sometimes we do not even realize that our chronic headache, backache, insomnia, muscle weakness, fatigue and more actually stem from stress.
The Birth of Barre
Barre was first created by Lotte Berk, a German dancer in 1940. Lotte Berk sustained a back injury and was unable to continue her career as a dancer, during her rehabilitative therapy she began to modify her classical ballet training and warm-up to fit with her physical therapy and barre was born. Ms. Berk originally held classes in her London apartment before opening her first studio in 1959. From there news spread across the pond to the U.S. and it wasn’t long after that students of Lotte Berk decided to open studios of their own, some franchising the Lotte Berk Method and others creating their own version like Bar Method and The Dailey Method.
Get Fit with Barre Nor Cal
My journey began in 2010 in San Francisco, where I was working in the corporate world in fashion and looking for a way to stay in shape. I come from a dance background and never fit in at traditional gym settings. I had been taking dance classes for fun, but needed something I could do regularly to stay fit. I lived near a barre studio and for my birthday my fiancé gave me a 1-month unlimited membership to try it out. I was in love after my first class! Shortly after, I began teaching classes for a franchise barre company on the side. Eventually, I craved to be at the barre studio more than my desk job. I made the leap in 2015 to leave my corporate job and created my own version of barre combining traditional barre movements with my own dance influences. My fiancé and I relocated back to El Dorado Hills in 2015 to be close to my family. We definitely take advantage of being so close to them now. We love to get together every weekend, from wine tasting to trips to Lake Tahoe together. My fiancé and I are planning our December 2016 wedding at San Francisco City Hall. We have lived all over the U.S. together from, San Francisco to New York, but there is no place like home.
Focus on 1 Goal at a Time
It maybe easy to see the end goal we want; to be healthier, find a new job, start our own company, make more money, take a vacation, the list goes on and on. It can be much harder to find your starting point. Yes, being healthy is important but what does that mean to you specifically? Start at the basics and create building blocks for yourself from there. Maybe you want to run in a marathon this year, how will you start to train? Once you dive into your first step that will open up your next door, such as what are the right kinds of foods to help fuel my run. Starting can be the most challenging part, especially if we do not know where to start. So pick a focus and try not to worry about the next 10 steps they will all fall into place as you being your new adventure.
2. Get your Beauty Sleep, men too!
Not only does a good night sleep help with those dark circles under your eyes, recent reports by a Harvard run Health Study link more sleep to decreasing your risk for colon cancer, breast cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Sleep has also been linked to improving your mood and helping you lose weight! So sleep in a little and leave the guilt behind.
3. Get your Heart Rate Up!
Your heart is a muscle so increasing your heart rate will help improve your heart strength. The American Heart Association recommends at least 25 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity 3 times a week.
